Albert Hernandez joins HNTB in South Florida as aviation project director

Accomplished professional engineer has impressive transportation and other leadership credentials earned during his three-decade career

MIAMI (July 1, 2019) – Albert Hernandez, PE, joined HNTB Corporation as aviation project director and vice president. He is based in the firm’s Miami office.

Hernandez leads HNTB’s service to aviation clients in South Florida, manages large-scale projects, and serves as a key client liaison, in addition to other duties.

Hernandez has more than 30 years of industry experience spanning a variety of infrastructure positions across the region, including a 14-year tenure with Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works. During his tenure there he led efforts to deliver the AirportLink project which encompassed a 2.5-mile extension of Miami-Dade Transit’s Metrorail system to Miami International Airport, a project budgeted at more than $500 million, completed in 2012 on schedule and under budget.

“Albert’s broad and impressive range of project experience will benefit transportation agencies working to accomplish complex programs to address congestion and improve mobility,” said Gus Pego, PE, HNTB South Florida office leader and vice president. “We look forward to his leadership to help South Florida exceed its potential as a smart and connected region.”

Previously, Hernandez managed planning and project development of several premium transit corridors under the county’s Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit Plan initiative. He is credited for his efforts to aggressively pursue public-private partnerships through transit-oriented developments at and near existing and proposed rail and bus stations.

Hernandez’ prior experience included serving as: COO for a consulting engineering company in Miami working on transportation and other infrastructure projects; senior project manager for development of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Terminal Access Roadway interchange project; and a ten-year career with the Florida Department of Transportation District 6.

Hernandez earned, with honors, a Master of Business Administration from Florida International University and graduated Cum Laude from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering. In addition, he is a graduate of the Florida Department of Transportation Leadership Academy and Harvard Business School Academy.

He is a registered professional engineer in Florida and New York and recipient of numerous awards including the Luis P. Saenz Award, formerly known as the Cuban American Engineer of the Year Award, from the Cuban-American Association of Civil Engineers and Engineer of the Year from the Miami chapter of the Florida Engineering Society.
