Atlanta Streetcar System
Expertise creates system that connects communities, increases mobility, decreases gridlock
• National, international expertise ensures project success
• Eco-friendly, fast service connects neighborhoods
• Transit-oriented development provides economic catalyst
HNTB worked with multiple stakeholders — including the City of Atlanta, Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority and Atlanta Downtown Improvement District — to communicate a vision for the 2.7-mile Atlanta streetcar system, which links with existing transit to increase mobility and decrease traffic congestion.
In addition to enabling communication and effective community outreach, HNTB helped manage funding, create design-build plans, implement the technical design, serve as resident engineer and oversee construction and quality assurance. Atlanta relied on HNTB to resolve construction issues and offer expertise about overhead contact systems, power, rails and vehicles.
The streetcar line now links the Old Fourth Ward (including the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site), midtown, Georgia State University and westside businesses and attractions. To date, the streetcar has welcomed more than 500,000 riders, sparked significant housing and new-business development, and increased attendance and employment at restaurants, galleries and other attractions.
