Central Florida Commuter Rail Transit Phase ICentral Florida
HNTB helps FDOT transform an active freight line to support Amtrak service
SunRail, the first phase of central Florida’s commuter rail project, is a 32-mile joint-use corridor, stretching from DeBary in Volusia County to Sand Lake Road in Orange County. The Florida Department of Transportation selected HNTB for construction engineering and inspection services. HNTB reconstructed grade crossings, installed 18 miles of double-tracking, constructed 12 stations and a vehicle storage and maintenance complex, implemented a new train dispatch system and overhauled existing signal systems.
During the day, the line will carry commuter traffic. At night, it will carry freight traffic. Phase 2 of the project will add another 31 miles from Deltona, Florida, south to Poinciana in Osceola County.
