George V. Voinovich Bridge

Cleveland, Ohio

New bridge is ODOT’s first major design-build project

• Partnering with community is a priority
• Bridge opens on time and under budget
• Design honors city’s steel heritage, points toward future

As part of a design-build team, HNTB developed a unique delta-girder design that provides an economical and aesthetically appealing bridge.

Extensive communications throughout every phase of the project kept stakeholders apprised of road closures and construction progress. Before construction began, the design-build team met with community representatives to discuss how best to provide information to affected residents.

Thanks to extensive use of both electronic media and grassroots tactics, the community was engaged in the construction process and felt a sense of pride in the construction effort.

The new George V. Voinovich Bridge was completed in 2 ½ years, on time and under budget. Concrete piers and arching steel reflect other bridges along the river while LED lights add to the modern feel.

The bridge will carry two-directional traffic until a second bridge is complete. HNTB served as ODOT’s owner representative during procurement of the second bridge
