HNTB helps fast track replacement of New York’s Tappan Zee Bridge

Design-build project is largest single civil construction contract awarded in New York
New cable-stayed bridge will ease congestion at a crucial Hudson River Crossing

As owner’s engineer for the New York State Thruway Authority, HNTB helped to replace at an extraordinarily fast pace the 62-year-old Tappan Zee Bridge over the Hudson River. Work began on the design-build job – the largest single civil contract awarded in New York – in early 2013. The northern span of the new cable-stayed structure will open in August 2017.

HNTB’s responsibilities as the owner’s engineer included managing the contract to get maximum value for toll payers, monitoring design and construction, auditing and verifying quality assurance, assisting with the complex maintenance of traffic and managing environmental mitigation.

The new bridge will carry 50 million vehicles a year and ease congestion at a crucial river crossing just north of New York City. It will feature twin three-mile-long structures with eight traffic lanes, four emergency/breakdown lanes, a pedestrian/bike path, space for bus rapid transit, the capacity for future commuter-rail lines and will not require major maintenance for 100 years.
