U.S. 90 Bridge Across St. Louis Bay
New Orleans, Louisiana
Reconstructed crossing jumpstarts commerce and hope along Mississippi’s Gulf Coast
• Design-build experience proves invaluable
• All four lanes open to traffic about 18 months after the first pile was driven
• Restoring vital transit link provides social, financial, emotional boost
HNTB was design engineer for the design-build project to reconstruct the Bridge Across St. Louis Bay, destroyed during Hurricane Katrina.
Winning the project by offering the fastest, most efficient means of repair, the team also provided construction engineering, inspection and post-design services.
Because the bridge served as a vital link — the region lost about $100,000 per day without it — the reconstruction demanded leadership, broad expertise and rapid issue resolution. Responding based on geotechnical expertise and other past experience, HNTB expedited design and construction so two traffic lanes could open fewer than 15 months after design began. All four lanes opened to traffic about 18 months after the first pile was driven. The process confirmed the value of HNTB’s design-build process, and gave the region a significant social, financial and emotional boost.
