Women’s Sports Expansion

With a vision to create spaces that foster growth and equality, Clemson University’s new women’s sports-focused expansion complex creates a unique, vibrant environment that promotes both athletics and leisure activities.

HNTB, in partnership with Garvin Design Group, served as designer for the state-of-the-art performance center and competitive field complex that has become the home to women’s lacrosse, gymnastics and rowing programs.

The complex includes:

• A 9,000-square-foot Lacrosse Operations Facility
• A 21,000-square-foot Gymnastics Operations and Training Facility
• A 10,000-square-foot Elite Athlete Recovery Center
• Sitework with 285 paved parking spaces

Lacrosse Operations Facility

The women’s lacrosse facility encompasses player, coaches and support spaces. An entry lobby and program showcase space provides direct access to the coaching suite. A central corridor with clerestory windows for natural daylighting leads to spaces including the team locker room, showers and restrooms, and sports medicine. The west end of the facility houses team lounge and nutrition areas with expansive glazing that open to an exterior patio with seating and views of the lake.

Gymnastics Operations and Training Facility

A covered breezeway links the gymnastics and lacrosse facilities. The gymnastics team locker room and lounge, along with sports medicine, flank the lobby and provide direct access to the 15,000-square-foot high-bay gymnastics training facility complete with pits and apparatus for the various competition events. Coaches’ offices and conference areas are accessed directly from the training floor.

Elite Athlete Recovery Center

A new 10,000-square-foot Elite Athlete Recovery Center is situated near the existing rowing facility and the boathouse. Specialized areas promoting sports science, nutrition and recovery are carefully arranged to frame expansive views of the nearby Lake Hartwell. The facility will help accomplish Title IX goals and is intended to serve student-athletes from the three women’s programs on the new complex’s site as well as other Clemson University athletic programs.

Now complete, the complex stands as a state-of-the-art facility for Clemson University's incredible female athletes to nurture their talents and grow their collective sports.
