The I-29/I-480/West Broadway System Interchange project is addressing capacity needs and improving safety and functionality on the crucial interstate system connecting Council Bluffs, Iowa, to downtown Omaha, Nebraska.

Increasing roadway capacity, reducing necessary lane changes and creating access from West Broadway to I-29 via one-way frontage roads, the project improvements are increasing efficiency and safety for motorists.

Delivering the design

HNTB provided environmental studies and documentation, right-of-way, roadway, bridge, drainage and geotechnical design services for retaining walls, two miles of interstate reconstruction and the preliminary design of 14 bridges and final design of nine bridges.

Navigating complex challenges

Dynamic conditions in the project corridor and proximity to the Missouri River levee required flexibility in design and delivery including innovative drainage features to mitigate and minimize existing flooding issues.

HNTB also developed a construction staging process used to reduce costs, minimize impacts to motorists and reduce the project schedule—allowing for delivery of the completed project 18 months earlier than projected.
