HNTB partnered with the Kansas Turnpike Authority to design 18 new cashless toll zones with72 overhead toll gantries for the entire 236-mile stretch of the Kansas Turnpike, which consists of some of the state's most heavily traveled interstate routes:
- Running east to west, I-70 is one of the two major interstates linking Kansas with its neighboring states.
- The other major interstate is the I-335/I-35 corridor, which branches from Topeka and stretches south into Oklahoma.
The firm provided engineering design, program management, back-office and toll technology support services, and assistance with site selection for the new cashless tolls where traffic flow was minimally impacted throughout the project. In rural areas with long stretches of road, HNTB’s planning leveraged existing fiber infrastructure to reduce costs and streamline the transition to cashless tolling.
The KTA cashless tolling conversion marks a major milestone in Kansas’ transportation modernization efforts. By eliminating the need for manual toll collection, KTA is poised to increase employee and customer safety, save on maintenance costs, reduce environmental impact and improve customer service for the millions of drivers who rely on the turnpike each year. Most importantly, the new system increases safety, efficiency and interoperability while paving the way for expected future growth.
HNTB has collaborated with KTA on multiple projects as part of the state's 10-year modernization program. Notably, the firm supported KTA’s Open Road Tolling Conversion, which served as a precursor to this more recent project.
