HNTB receives West Virginia Department of Highways Engineering Excellence Awards

Recognition underscores the firm’s commitment to delivering exceptional value and innovative infrastructure solutions across the state

SCOTT DEPOT, W.V. (Oct. 4, 2024) – HNTB has been honored by the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) with multiple Engineering Excellence Awards at the annual American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of West Virginia Joint Transportation Forum and Engineering Excellence Awards Banquet. The firm was recognized in the following categories:

Large Bridge category: Morgantown Industrial Park Access Road project – First Place

HNTB served as the engineer of record for a new access road and bridge that connects the Morgantown Industrial Park with US 119 and Interstate 68, crossing the Monongahela River. This bridge and its adjoining roadway will provide vital access for developments within the growing industrial park while prioritizing community safety. The design process, which included contract plans and permitting, was completed within a highly compressed schedule.

Statewide Coatings Inspection Services category: District 7 Coatings Inspection – First Place

HNTB provided bridge painting inspection for WVDOH’s District 7 Maintenance Division. The specialized coatings inspection covered six bridges: Burnsville Bridge, Heaters Fork Bridge, Dusk Camp Bridge, Stumptown Bridge, Post Mille Bridge and McCauley Run Bridge. Notably, this marks the second consecutive year that HNTB’s inspection team has secured first place in this category.

Planning category: Grant Support related to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) – Third Place

HNTB supported WVDOH in securing more than $25 million through multiple grant applications, leveraging programs enabled by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. HNTB’s comprehensive services encompassed project definition, application planning and development, benefit-cost analysis and client support throughout the entire application process.

Honorees are nominated by WVDOH staff for demonstrating engineering excellence in categories such as small bridge, large bridge, small roadway, large roadway, planning, traffic, environmental and construction inspection. The final award selection is made by the Secretary of Transportation based upon criteria such as successful delivery, innovation, meeting difficult schedules and technical excellence.

For nearly 75 years, HNTB has played a pivotal role West Virginia’s most transformative transportation projects including Blennerhassett Bridge, West Virginia Parkways Authority’s Travel Plazas, I-77 Beckley Widening, Fairmont Gateway Connector, I-79 Bridge Rehabilitation Bundle and Coalfields Expressway. The firm’s commitment to local communities has fostered economic growth and strengthened community ties throughout the state.
