As part of HNTB’s design upon request contract with the Chicago Department of Water Management (CDWM), our team provided final design services and plan documents for the Archer Avenue Sewer Improvement. This project included the replacement of sewer mains varying in diameter from 84 to 42 inches and installation of a cast-in-place junction structure for connection to a 12- by 14-foot concrete sewer main.
To minimize impacts to the residential neighborhood and adjacent McKinley Park and reduce overall restoration costs, HNTB recommended to tunnel approximately 2,000 feet of 84-inch diameter sewer on 37th Street from Archer Avenue to Seely Avenue. HNTB worked with CDWM to compare costs, identify general construction procedures and jacking/receiving pit locations, and develop a specification to be included in the construction documents for soft ground tunneling.
