Replacing the WALK bridge on the Nation’s Busiest Rail Corridor
Join this session to learn about the Connecticut Department of Transportation's ongoing $1.6 billion program to replace a 127 year-old, 564-foot long, 4-track movable swing span on Metro-North Railroad’s New Haven Line that connects Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C. This case study will represent a mid-construction check-in to a program that began in 2014 and is expected to finish in 2029. The presentation will explore lessons learned, including when a project is really a program, alternative delivery methods, third parties, and stakeholder engagement. Learning Objectives: Evaluate the necessity of scope additions against the fundamental objectives established for the project/program. Establish and utilize a robust and effective lessons learned process for continual improvement. Perform regular, honest, self-assessments of cost and schedule, using defined metrics to avoid wishful thinking and unrealistic outcomes. List the key benefits and liabilities of the General Contractor/Construction Manager procurement method.

Construction 2.0: The Importance of Comprehensive Project and Program Controls
Moving an owner or client from static, analog processes to integrated, digital systems is challenging. This session shows how to avoid common stumbling blocks when approaching this topic with an owner/client. See ways to convert old processes to digital solutions, strategies to mitigate sticker shock, new efficiencies, and integrations that increase digital resiliency. Attendees explore how to change an organization's culture, learn how to up-skill and cross-train controls staff, and discuss some appropriate training for executive-level professionals. Learning Objectives: Conduct effective discovery and provide meaningful consultation to clients on the digital transformation of existing processes. Arm themselves with proven approaches to introducing new digital PM/CM solutions. List clear objectives for their pursuit/project teams around how to approach digital PM/CM migration conversations with clients or owners. Demonstrate an understanding of the various ways cost can play a major factor in selecting digital solutions, and how to best mitigate it.

JFK Redevelopment Program, Building 111: Success with Local, Diverse Business Participation
The John F. Kennedy International Airport Redevelopment (JFKR) Program is overhauling eight separate terminals to streamline airport infrastructure while also incorporating the latest in passenger amenities and technological innovations. In this session, learn about the Building 111 project to develop a centralized office for the JFKR Program's management, design-build, and terminal development teams. See how the project team managed the overall scope with a consortium of local, small business, minority-owned, and women-owned business enterprises to meet and exceed the contract requirements. Learning Objectives: Upon completion, the participant will be able to understand the complexities of managing many small businesses working at the same location concurrently. Upon completion, the participant will be able to identify the systems/tools required to be in place to ensure the success of small businesses that are contracted with their organizations. Upon completion, the participant will be able to describe the challenges associated with renovations of existing structures and unforeseen conditions that may impact construction progress. Upon completion, the participant will be able to conduct a community outreach boot-camp to help local business identify work opportunities in their area.

Matt joined HNTB in 2004 as a structural engineer and has worked on projects from coast to coast in the United States, bringing a diverse set of skills and knowledge to each client and project. His expertise includes leading diverse multidiscipline teams; program and alternative delivery; construction support; rail and movable bridge design; architectural engineering; and knowledge of all phases of construction from conception to completion. Matt has most recently been part of the design team for the CM-GC Walk Bridge Replacement in CT, the Owner's Engineer team for the design-build Tappan Zee Bridge Replacement in NY, and the design team for the Golden Gate Bridge Physical Suicide Deterrent System in CA.
