Accomplished transportation leader will leverage national knowledge in planning, policy, operations and financing
INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 13, 2025) – Mike Smith, former commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation, has joined HNTB as a national practice consultant and vice president. He brings more than two decades of strategic and operations management, transportation policy, stakeholder engagement and leadership experience to drive growth and project delivery to the firm’s highway and toll clients in the Great Lakes Division.

Throughout his decade-long career with INDOT, he excelled in various management and leadership roles, enhancing operational performance and productivity, fostering relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, cultivating talent and creating economic investment development opportunities.
Smith will also support HNTB’s national DOT and toll market teams in building and fostering relationships with clients across the country.

Smith previously served as the chairman of the Northern Indiana Commuter Train District and Indiana Toll Road Oversight Board and was a board member of Connexus Indiana. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in management from Indiana University.
