Project upgraded and replaced aging critical infrastructure in Brooklyn
NEW YORK CITY (July 19, 2024) – HNTB joined the New York City Department of Design and Construction in celebrating the completion of their BED798 project, a water infrastructure improvement project in the historic Park Slope area of Brooklyn. The project consisted of replacing trunk and distribution water mains, combined sewers and appurtenances. HNTB provided resident engineering inspection and construction management services for this project.
“We are proud to celebrate the completion of this project alongside our client, the NYCDDC,” said Will Torres, HNTB vice president and program management and construction management group director. “Replacing century-old critical infrastructure with resilient solutions is imperative to accommodate not only a growing population but also to prepare for more severe climate conditions that are impacting the Northeast. HNTB has the experience and expertise to assist our clients with this challenge.”
During construction, an existing 66-inch and 72-inch steel trunk water main – dating back to 1913 – was replaced with 4,900 feet of new 72-inch steel spiral-welded trunk main. The new trunk mains include both cement lining and a cathodic protection system that will significantly extend the life of this critical water supply facility. Coordination with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection allowed for these facility replacements to occur without disrupting water supply for a large portion of South Brooklyn.
The project also included capacity upgrades to the area’s combined sewer system using precast concrete box culvert and reinforced concrete pipes. These combined sewer upgrades improve the system’s capacity to meet increasing stormwater management.
