HNTB completes final design for Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Gold Star Memorial Bridge

Firm meets accelerated schedule to deliver final design for the Northbound Bridge

HARTFORD, Conn. (April 10, 2025) HNTB has announced the completion of the final design for the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s (CTDOT) Northbound Gold Star Memorial Bridge rehabilitation project. This project involves a comprehensive design and replacement of the full concrete deck across the entire Northbound Bridge, which spans 6,000 feet.

The bridge carries five lanes of Interstate-95 vehicular traffic over the Thames River, multiple railroad tracks and local roads between New London and Groton. The 1.2-mile-long structure – carrying almost 60,000 vehicles daily – is one of the largest in the state.

“It is an honor to support CTDOT on their ambitious plan to rehabilitate ones of the largest bridges in the state,” said Jacob Argiro, HNTB’s Connecticut office leader and vice president. “Working on significant projects like the Gold Star Bridge showcases the technical prowess HNTB has in the bridge and transportation sector. We look forward to seeing the design of this iconic bridge become a reality in the coming years.”

The project was awarded a $158 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration through the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Large Bridge grant. This funding has been instrumental in accelerating the construction phases to enable the bridge to become fully operational a year earlier than traditional timelines. Construction on the Northbound Bridge is expected to begin Summer 2025.
