Sara Benson joins HNTB as deputy program manager

Accomplished project manager brings more than 24 years of experience overseeing transit station development and modernization in the Capital Region

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 31, 2024) Sara Benson, P.E. has joined HNTB Corporation, a leading infrastructure solutions firm, as deputy program manager, bringing with her more than 24 years of extensive expertise in project management, transportation planning and transit project delivery.

“We are excited to add Sara’s project management expertise to our team of transit and rail professionals,” said David Leard, HNTB’s Capital Region program management/construction management group director and associate vice president. “Her successful track record of overseeing a wide range of facilities development programs in the Capital Region and extensive experience in the public sector will continue to enhance the services we provide to our clients.”

In her role, Benson will work closely with the firm’s transit and rail clients and project teams to manage major transit programs including station modernization projects from feasibility through design and delivery.

“Sara’s deep understanding of the transit industry and superior leadership skills will be crucial for us as we continue to deliver transit projects that enhance mobility across our region,” said Mike Voinis, HNTB’s Capital Region office leader and senior vice president. “Her dynamic experience managing significant transit programs in the Capital Region adds tremendous value to our firm.”

Prior to joining HNTB, Benson served as senior manager of facilities development for Amtrak, where she directed more than 100 station development projects. Benson also previously served as a project manager at Washington Metro Area Transit Authority, where she developed a portfolio of station improvement projects and managed and mentored a team of more than 55 staff and consultants. Benson received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Lafayette College. Benson is a licensed professional engineer in Virginia.
