Todd Childress rejoins HNTB as Transportation Group Director

Structural engineering leader to oversee transformative infrastructure initiatives

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Feb. 11, 2025) – Todd Childress, PE, has rejoined HNTB as Capital Region transportation group director. With more than 30 years of experience in bridge and structural engineering and project management, Childress will lead significant transportation infrastructure projects for clients across Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., driving large-scale initiatives to enhance mobility and deliver modern infrastructure.

In his role, Childress will collaborate closely with HNTB’s clients to identify project goals and implement tailored strategies to advance their transportation programs. His responsibilities include overseeing all aspects of project delivery, from scope development to cost and quality control, ensuring efficient management of complex, multidisciplinary projects.

Childress brings extensive experience in Southern Virginia’s transportation network, having worked on key infrastructure projects that improve mobility and connectivity in the region. Most recently, he worked with a consulting firm where he served as program manager for the Virginia Department of Transportation Hampton Road District’s Program Support Services for Special Structures. Other previous roles include serving as the senior transportation manager and project manager for transformative projects such as the Greenwich Road Flyover as part of the I-264/I-64 Interchange (Phase II) in Virginia Beach, Va., and Dominion Boulevard Improvements in Chesapeake, Va.  His expertise in design-bid-build and design-build delivery, combined with his innovative approach to structural challenges, has established him as a leader in the transportation sector.

For more than 70 years, HNTB has played a key role in shaping the Capital Region’s largest, most transformative infrastructure projects. These include the I-264/I-64 Interchange, Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, Elizabeth River Tunnels, Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, I-95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension and Long Bridge North.

Childress holds both a master’s and bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Old Dominion University. He is a registered professional engineer in Virginia.
