HNTB is collaborating with the University of Kansas on major upgrades to the David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, a renovation and expansion of the Anderson Family Football Complex and a number of new, multipurpose facilities. Together, the projects will make up KU’s Gateway District – a space that will stand in the heart of the Lawrence campus and welcome students, fans and the public alike.
Designing an Upgraded Experience
The redesigned stadium will include upgrades to the in-game fan experience. Features include a seating bowl design with improved sightlines to increase fan comfort and bring them closer to the field; expanded concessions, restrooms and accessible seating locations; improved concourse circulation; and new premium amenities such as club seats, ledge seats and suites.
Nestled into the landscape, the design of the stadium creates and connects indoor-outdoor areas that builds a further sense of community.
Phase one of Anderson Family Football Complex, which includes a brand-new locker room and weight room, is completed and opened to athletes. The second phase features a new entry lobby, expanded auditorium, coaches’ offices and team meeting rooms. New, state-of-the-art sports medicine, sports science and recovery areas will enable KU student-athletes to prepare and recover as effectively as possible. One of the club lounges adjacent to the complex will serve as a training table for student-athletes.
Expanding Spaces for the Community
Stadium and sport facility updates aren’t the only focuses of the Gateway District project. Set to support regional economic growth in Lawrence for decades to come, new multi-purpose facilities are designed to be utilized year-round by the university and community. These spaces will include a mix of conference, entertainment and retail space.
Once completed, these projects will usher in a new era for the university, benefiting the entire community and providing the facilities needed for KU to compete at the highest level and provide the best-possible game day experience for student-athletes and fans.
