The Eastside Transit Corridor Phase 2 project is an extension to the Los Angeles Metro transit network. HNTB is delivering the preliminary engineering design for a 4.7-mile extension of the Metro E Line as part of a broader 9-mile expansion connecting East Los Angeles to the City of Whittier. By expanding Metro’s transit network, the project aims to provide direct rail access to underserved Eastside communities, linking them to Downtown Los Angeles and other Metro lines.
The Phase 2 expansion builds on the achievements of Phase 1, which extended the light rail from Downtown Union Station to East Los Angeles. The Metro expansion aims to further decrease travel times, improve regional connectivity and foster economic growth for both residents and businesses.
Innovative Urban Transit Solutions
Designed to navigate dense urban environments, the Eastside Transit Corridor Phase 2 project incorporates diverse transit infrastructure, including 3 miles of tunneling and 1 mile of aerial structures. Key design elements include:
- Four metro stations; one at ground level and three underground
- Mixed alignment, including at-grade tracks, underground segments, semi-buried stations and elevated aerial sections
- One park-and-ride facility
- Engineering solutions for construction beneath railroad tracks, utilities, industrial properties and residential zones
- 13 cross-passages for enhanced safety and access
Partnerships Driving Success
Working closely with LA Metro, HNTB, in partnership with Cordoba, conducted advanced conceptual engineering and urban design services for the Eastside Transit Corridor Phase 2. Other key contributions include:
- Coordination of surveys, utilities and traffic
- Collaboration with regulatory agencies and stakeholders
- Ensuring compliance with California Environmental Quality Act requirements
With a shared commitment to connecting communities and enhancing mobility, HNTB and LA Metro are shaping public transportation to meet the needs of Los Angeles County for decades to come.
