The Franklin Square Station, a once dormant transit hub, has been brought back to life through a comprehensive revitalization project. This initiative has transformed the station into a modern, efficient and accessible transit facility, breathing new life into a previously underutilized facility to support the growth of surrounding neighborhoods.
Reopening passenger service for the first time since 1979, the Franklin Square Station is increasing intracity access as the 14th station in the PATCO Speedline — the Port Authority Transit Corporation’s rapid transit system.
Reinforcing Renewal
HNTB provided construction monitoring and inspection services for the project. In this role, HNTB certified the safety and compliance of materials and workmanship with contract documents, industry standards and federal grant guidelines — ensuring construction processes follow the highest standards of quality and safety.
Transformative Upgrades
A range of modernization efforts support the station’s restoration, including:
- Structural Upgrades: Lasting reinforcements to the station’s infrastructure guarantee its compliance with contemporary safety and operational standards.
- Accessibility Enhancements: Installing elevators, ramps and other ADA-compliant features ensures the station is accessible to all passengers.
- Technological Improvements: Advanced signaling, mechanical, electrical and communication systems increase operational efficiency while energy-efficient lighting and eco-friendly upgrades — including a green roof and bird-friendly glass — strengthen sustainability.
- Aesthetic Renovations: Updated designs incorporating the station’s original 1930s green and white subway tiles create a welcoming and visually appealing environment for passengers while preserving its historic character.
- Historic Location: Franklin Square is located in one of the most historic neighborhoods in the nation. With Independence Hall only several blocks away, this station provides easy access to tourists arriving from New Jersey as well as across the City of Brotherly Love.
Offering an additional transportation option between Philadelphia and New Jersey, the revitalization and reintegration of the Franklin Square Station in Philadelphia’s transit network brings increased connectivity and convenience for travelers in the region.
